Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Samantha Bates

What is your favorite book? Why?
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. It helped foster my interest in mythology and fantasy.

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I’m from Fanwood, New Jersey. I went to Golda Och Academy, formerly known as Solomon Schechter Day School of Essex and Union.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
I really like the community it builds and the camaraderie that can be found because of it. It also helps campus feel less big! Seeing familiar faces and friends all over campus from all sorts of majors and activities but knowing them from Jewish life is nice.

Do you have any siblings?
I do! One younger sibling, 16 years old and a pain in my butt. I love them dearly. Most of the time.

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
I have lots of hobbies, but I mostly do digital art and crochet, as well as makeup and fashion. I really enjoy expressing myself in new and creative ways, so these hobbies give me the chance to do so.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
My mom’s brisket. She uses Coca-Cola, onion soup mix, and chili sauce. She won’t give me the full recipe yet, though.

What is your favorite food?
Miso soup and sushi rice. If I’m feeling fun, I’ll throw in some tuna mayo onigiri. They’re super easy and are super reliable. They taste good every time!

If you were a breakfast cereal, which one would you be and why?
I’d be Cocoa Puffs. I dress all in black and I will leave black smudges on things by accident (sorry), but I’m still sweet!

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
Stargazing on the basketball courts at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires. They brought in a professional telescope and we got to see Jupiter and Saturn, and we talked for hours about space and ourselves in relativity to it.

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
Shabbat dinners with my friends. I get to slow down at the end of the week and enjoy a good meal with my friends. I can catch up with them and see how they’re doing, or I can meet new people and make new friends! It’s very nice to be able to celebrate Shabbat with a community.

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
I spent a week straight learning BTS lore! I watched all the music videos, I listened to all the albums and read all the translations, and I watched as many analysis videos as I could. It was fun to go hunting through the music videos, searching for theory evidence!

Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

If you want your inner animal to stay kosher, chew your cud well.

Don't let the stuff growing on the ground enter into your life without multiple ruminations.

First, ask, "Do I need to do this for my purpose in life?"

Then, once that question is answered, "What is its place and how should I use it?"

This is the path to a meaningful, uncluttered life.

Rather than the earth pulling you down, you lift it up.
