Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Josh Dorfman

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I am an Integrative Neuroscience major. I chose IN because I wanted something that was more interdisciplinary, that combined and integrated two subjects as opposed to just studying basic biology or psychology.

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
I chose Binghamton because it is close to home but not too close and has incomparable Jewish life where you can feel safe walking around as a Jew.

What is your favorite book? Why?
My favorite book/s is the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I find the journey to be inspiring and that the experiences can be related to many things that everyone goes through. My father is also a Tolkien fan.

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I'm from Riverdale, NY. I went to SAR High School.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
I really like the feeling of togetherness and closeness in the Binghamton Jewish community. It feels like a safe place for Jews where there is a love for Israel. The fact that I live in a place referred to as "The Shtetl" says it all, where most of my neighbors are Jews.

Do you have any siblings?
Yes, I have one younger sister. She goes to Barnard.

Do you have a hobby?
I enjoy hiking and sailing. They both get me outside in nature.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
My favorite Jewish food, against popular opinion, is gifilte fish. It just reminds me of home, Shabbos and holidays. Unlike other "Jewish foods", you never really eat gifilte fish besides on Shabbos or a holiday.

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
My favorite memory is having all my extended family come to my house for Rosh Hashana.

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
My favorite Chabad experience has always been Friday night dinner. Especially when I was a freshman, I would crave the warm yellow glow of dinner at Chabad with all noise and excitement. It is a place where the stress of the school week can disappear and you can be with all your friends.

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
Going for long walks with my family almost every day.

Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

Everything we see about us is but a reflection of that which is above.

A king in our world reflects dominion above.

The sweetness of a fruit reflects the sweetness of the wisdom above.

The form of the human body reflects the inner structure of the cosmos, so that each limb and organ parallels a particular divine force.

Each of these things descends from its G‑dly place into our material realm to take tangible form—so that we can grasp those G‑dly concepts from which they extend.

Even those inventions that arose only in the modern era were hidden all this time within the Creation, waiting for us to discover them and reconnect them with their G‑dly source and meaning.
