Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Evan Spector

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
Binghamton University is considered the “Crown Jewel” of the SUNY schools. I wanted to attend somewhere that would be challenging and very rewarding at the same time. Moreover, Binghamton is a place with a strong and vibrant Jewish community.

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I’m majoring in Biochemistry. I decided to pursue this degree because I really enjoy Biology and Chemistry and didn’t want to choose one over the other.

What is your favorite book? Why?
My favorite book is the Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkein. I like this book because one of the lessons is the importance of taking chances. There are many adventures that await in life if one, first, steps out of their comfort zone.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
My favorite Jewish food is Raskin’s Gefilte Fish. It’s a fundamental dish to my Shabbat meal when I’m home.

What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is shawarma.

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I’m from Long Island, New York. I attended the Schechter School of Long Island for high school.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
I love that Shabbat dinner fosters a strong sense of community. I enjoy catching up with people I don’t see during the week, good food, and the opportunity to meet new people.

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
My favorite Jewish childhood memory was my bar mitzvah.

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
My favorite Chabad experience is the annual mitzvah marathon on 9/11. I especially enjoyed that this year Chabad and Hillel came together to commemorate a very important day.

What’s your favorite lockdown experience?
Having Shabbat dinners with my family. It was a great escape from the stresses of the pandemic.

Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

In the Hebrew month of Elul, the month before Rosh Hashanah, a voice inside whispers that it’s time to return home.

Some return, even from the most distant places. Some want to return, but cannot overcome their ways.

So the voice inside whispers, “I know you want to return. I appreciate that.”

Some more return. Some try, but are just too tied down.

So the voice inside whispers again, “Even if you don’t return now, I want you to know that you are deeply loved.”

Upon feeling such love, an unbounded love that comes from the very essence of being, who could not return?

In the month before Rosh Hashanah, listen for that voice. Listen deeply.
