Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring James Rozenshteyn

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I am majoring in linguistics and minoring in translation. I’ve always loved languages, and the fundamental issues of translation keep me up at night. More so than anything, it’s something that I love that I could see myself doing for a living and not getting burnt out on.

What is your favorite book? Why?
Ooh, that’s a hard one. For now, I’m gonna go with Ilya Kaminsky’s Deaf Republic, because so much of the poetry from it lives in my head rent-free.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
That it’s so varied! The Jewish community here is big enough to facilitate so much variety, just because you don’t fit with one group doesn’t mean you can’t have a Jewish life on campus.

Do you have any siblings?
2, a little sister and a little brother.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
Depends on what I’m craving. Sfenj is definitely up there, though.

What is your favorite food?
Strawberries! Or peaches. Or raspberries. Ooh or blackberries. I think I just like fruit.

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
Waiting for my parents to bless all of us kids after kiddush on Friday night.

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
I remember one day I was in the living room, doing a puzzle on the floor, and my dad, who because of the pandemic was working from home for the first time since I was born, walked into the room, ruffled my hair, and kept walking to go sit down and finish up a spreadsheet. It wasn’t exactly an experience per se, but getting to be with my family during the day on a non-Shabbat was really nice

SOUL COFFEE
Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

The sound of the shofar
is not the cry of a human voice.
It is the howl of an animal’s horn.

It is a cry so primal, so raw,
that the mind ceases to ponder,
the heart suspends its throb.

With the fury of a beast pent up in its cage,
the naked essence of the soul bursts out,
howling, ripping through heaven’s curtains,
awakening the primal essence of all being.

The raw core of your soul below
touches the Primal Essence above,
and now their reunion may begin.
