What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I am majoring in Psychology and minoring in Writing studies. I decided to pursue this honestly because at first I wasn't sure what I wanted to study, and I find people the most interesting thing to learn about. Turns out, it was a great choice because of its flexibility and class engagement.
Where are you from? Where did you go to high school?
I'm from West Orange, NJ and I went to Kushner for high school.
What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
My favorite thing about Jewish life on campus is that anything- whether it be programming, Torah learning, Shabbat, holidays- can be impactful to Jewish students, and anyone can choose to engage in or take lead on that.
Do you have any siblings?
I have four siblings, one of whom graduated and married a fellow bearcat, and another who is graduating from Binghamton in the spring with his MBA. Binghamton legacy!
What is your favorite book? Why?
I love the series I'm reading now by James Patterson called the Alex Cross series. It's about a detective and it's so well-written. There's so many books, I can't wait for the next one in the series!
What is your favorite Jewish food?
I absolutely love chulent. Give me any chulent and I will eat it. Shoutout to Mathew Plotsker, King of Chulent.
If you were a breakfast cereal, which one would you be and why?
Definitely a bagel. I love bagels.
What's your dream job?
I want to be a best selling author and travel for presentations on my work.
What's a quote or saying that you like?
“Not being beautiful was the true blessing... Not being beautiful forced me to develop my inner resources. The pretty girl has a handicap to overcome.” - Golda Meir. She is an absolute queen for saying this. Legendary.
What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
I always adored purim. My family would have a draft with the mishloach manot we received, with each sibling choosing a treat one at a time, and then we would trade at the end. We still do it!
What's your favorite lockdown experience?
Definitely all the walks I went on with my family. It was a hard time but we made the most of it.

Shabbat with Emily Fleischman
Friday, Feb. 3, 2023
Emily Fleischman '17 was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome (TS) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) when she was 6 years old. After suffering shame and bullying for years she turned the tables and advocacy and leadership became her key focus.
Emily put a face to the conditions by lecturing at schools and universities as New Jersey’s Youth Ambassador for the Tourette Association of America (TAA). She lobbied Congress to sign an act advancing research for neurological diseases, wrote a children’s book called Emily's Tic, mentored high school kids, and expanded her lectures to include hospitals. She is currently on the national Tourette Association of America Committee of Professional
Nurses. She works as a nurse at Lenox Hill hospital in NYC.
