Join us for Shabbat with special guest Emily Fleischman '17!
Emily was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome (TS) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) when she was 6 years old. After suffering shame and bullying for years she turned the tables and advocacy and leadership became her key focus. Emily put a face to the conditions by lecturing at schools and universities as New Jersey’s Youth Ambassador for the Tourette Association of America (TAA). She lobbied
Congress to sign an act advancing research for neurological diseases, wrote a children’s book called Emily's Tic, mentored high school kids, and expanded her lectures to include hospitals. She is currently on the national Tourette Association of America Committee of Professional Nurses. She works as a nurse at Lenox Hill hospital in NYC.

Featuring Ada Hepner
Do you have a hobby? Why do you love it?
I compose music, both classical and non classical. I did not choose this hobby; it chose me.
Do you have any siblings?
I have a twin who doesn’t go here, an older brother who’s 21, and two younger brothers who are 13 and 11.
What is your favorite book? Why?
This isn’t quite a book, but to avoid cliche, I’ll say the Epic of Gilgamesh. You think it’s going one way, and then it goes a much more vulnerable direction. I read it in about an hour, and it blew me away.
What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
There are so many of us that you can always find a group of people to feel at home with.
If you were a breakfast cereal, which one would you be and why?
Multi-grain Cheerios. It’s branded as a healthy cereal, but it’s still enjoyable to eat because of all the added sugar.
Where are you from? Where did you go to high school?
I’m from California (not L.A.). I went to Tarbut V’Torah from K-12.
What's your favorite lockdown experience?
My friend group from shul started to meet weekly on Shabbat. We’ve been continuing since then, and it’s only gotten better. Having time with friends scheduled for you is the best medicine (apart from the vaccine.)
What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I’m between psychology and neuroscience right now, and possibly doubling in philosophy. I thought I would do biology or biochem, but I found myself researching psychology in my free time and realizing this is what I’m most passionate about.
What is your favorite Jewish food?
A solid babka.
What is your favorite food?
Fuji apples. At home, I eat up to four a day.
What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
When I was about 9, I started Sefer Yehoshua with a tutor, my sister, and a couple of friends. We finished two years later and ate ice cream together to celebrate. Unfortunately, the tutor could not come; she lives across the country and taught us through video call.
