Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Daniel Stempel

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I’m majoring in Mechanical Engineering, and I chose it because I’m a big technical thinker, and am a huge car enthusiast. Math and physics have always been two of my favorite subjects, and I love crafting and building things.

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
I was looking for a small school type of vibe that wasn’t too far away from home, and I knew a lot of people who were already at Bing and said it was great. When I came to visit, it seemed like a homely place with a bustling Jewish community, and it really seemed like it would be a good fit!

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I’m from Teaneck, New Jersey and I went to Frisch.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
Shabbos at Binghamton is the absolute best, I count down the days every week! It’s really nice vibes, and Friday night chills and Shabbos afternoon cornhole games are the best. I also really enjoy the good cooking and the group setting at Chabad meals!

Do you have any siblings?
I have one younger sister who is three years younger than me.

What is your favorite book? Why?
My favorite book is probably Unlocking Greatness by Charlie Harary. It’s a great philosophical book about having a positive mindset, and it’s really helped me discover new ways to be a better person!

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
I like to play basketball in my free time. I find it really relaxing and a good way to have fun with your friends and get some good cardio in.

What is your favorite food?
Favorite food in general is way too hard, but I’d have to put schnitzel as my #1.

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
My favorite Jewish holiday is Purim! It’s a time where you are meant to have fun and be happy, express your creativity with a costume, and also eat an unhealthy amount of junk food.

What's your dream job?
My dream job would probably be to work at a flying car company, that seems really cool and something that could be possible in the future, plus it fits right into my wheelhouse of things that I’m studying.

What's a quote or saying that you like?
“Gamzu L’Tova”, it means that everything is for the good. It really helps me keep going whenever something is going wrong or when I’m having a bad day. You just gotta know that everything will work out and you don’t have to worry since Hashem has your back.

How do you envision yourself in twenty years?
Living in Israel!

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
Friday night meals are the best. The food slaps, and you also get to talk and chill together with all your friends! Meal prep on Thursday and Friday in the kitchen is also sick vibes.

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
Playing Rocket League with my friends till 2 AM.

What makes you proud to be a Jew?
We’re simply built different. Faith, prayers, food, celebrations, and just life in general, we do it like no other, because we have Hashem and the Torah!

Torah Thought

In Parshas Ki Teitzei, we learn about the Bein Sorer u’Moreh (Devarim 21:18-21), the wayward son. I heard a great dvar Torah in Chabad one Friday night when a student quoted a Rebbe in Yeshivat Lev HaTorah. It started with asking, why is there such a big emphasis on the topic of the Bein Sorer u’Moreh when the Gemorah states that the case will never occur (Sanhedrin 71a)? The reason is to teach us that no matter how far away someone feels from Hashem (G-d) or Yiddishkeit (Judaism), there is always room for Teshuva (repentance.) What a great Elul lesson, and as we head towards Rosh Hashanah.

Advice for Life

What are the best places to eat on campus as a student who eats Kosher?
- Hungry Student

Dear Hungry Student,
First, there is the “Kosher Korner” in the C4 Dining Hall.

Also, lucky for you, Chabad has a pizza parlor in their basement and is open Mondays, Tuesdays, & Saturday nights!

They also have a delicious Deli open on Tuesdays from 6-7PM.

Enjoy!
