Torah Thought

In this week’s Parsha, we get an understanding of the ideal way to repent and improve our ways (Devarim Ch. 30). We are that we will return Unto Hashem, your God (ibid, 30:2). Sforno comments that this means the ideal repentance should be from a desire to come closer to Hashem. How can we find that type of motivation? The Pasuk (verse) before can provide an answer when it says, Then you will take it to your heart. These words teach us that having an intellectual connection with Hashem is not enough, but we must also have an emotional connection. Then, we will hopefully come closer to the optimal repentance out of the desire to come closer to Hashem. What a timely lesson the Torah gives us as we approach Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
