Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Jake Nussbaum

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I’m majoring in psychology. I chose this major, because I love to listen and help others.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
I love how everyone’s so friendly and open to new people.

Do you have any siblings?
Yes I have two - a younger brother Max who is 18 and a younger sister Ella who is 14.

What is your favorite book? Why?
I don’t have a favorite but the best book I’ve read in a while is Dear Rabbi, Why Can’t I Marry Her? By Rabbi Eliezer Shemtov

What's your dream job?

I would test drive and review sports cars.

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
I love to fish. I find it so peaceful and I love the anticipation and skill involved with catching fish.

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
Purim because it’s such a fun and meaningful holiday. I love making and giving our mishloach manot and having so much fun with friends.

What's a quote or saying that you like?
“If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
Friday night Davening every week is my favorite. I love singing and dancing with all my friends after a long week of school.

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
Overall just being able to be outside more. My school made the days shorter so I had much more time to play outside. For example playing tennis, running around with my brother and working out in the park.

Torah Thought

In this week’s Torah portion, we are given a valuable lesson or tool on how we should view our relationship with G-d and keeping the Torah. In the second verse, Moses says his teaching (referring to the Torah, as Moses was the first Rabbi) should drop like rain and flow like dew (Devarim 32:2). Rashi explains the reason for this comparison is to tell us that the Torah and the commitment needed to learn Torah should give us life and strength similar to how rain grows crops. Next, the Torah is compared to dew because dew never inconveniences anyone, teaching us that we should not view keeping the Torah and G-d’s wishes as an inconvenience but rather as an opportunity to grow as people.

Advice for Life

How do I celebrate Yom Kippur in Binghamton?
- Religiously motivated student

Dear fellow Jew,
On campus C4 provides Yom Kippur Evening, morning, micha and Neila!

Downtown?
No worries!
Chabad Downtown also provides Yom Kippur evening, morning and Neila services.

Both places also are followed by the sound of Shofar and an amazing buffet break-fast.

Enjoy!
