Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Evan Wortman

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I am majoring in computer engineering and I chose this degree because it gives me access to a large variety of fields within engineering and computer science.

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
I chose Binghamton University because of the huge Jewish community that it had to offer and the instate tuition.

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I am from Staten Island (which is a borough) and I went to Staten Island Technical High School.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
My favorite part about Jewish life on campus is that anything and everything that I could ever need to be where I want religiously is provided for me.

Do you have any siblings?
Yes! I Have nine siblings, which include 6 step siblings, 1 half sibling, and 2 full siblings, or to make it simpler five brothers and four sisters.

What is your favorite book? Why?
I really enjoy the Harry Potter series and must've read the whole thing at least five times. My favorite books in the series are the 5th and 6th ones which are the Order of the Phoenix and the Half Blood Prince.

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
My favorite Jewish holiday is definitely Pesach because I just absolutely love the Seders.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
My favorite Jewish food has got to be a good Cholent but only when it is eaten on Shabbat day.

What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is a nice steamy beef dumpling. I don't know what it is but something about them just tastes delicious to me.

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
It is hard to say what my favorite Chabad experience is, especially when I have new ones all the time, but an experience that is definitely up there is singing at Seudah Shlishit.

What makes you proud to be a Jew?
Being able to walk around anywhere I want to go wearing a Kippah and Tzitzit without feeling any sort of fear despite the thousands of years of persecution that the Jews have faced makes me extremely proud to be a Jew.

Torah Thought

In this week’s Parsha, we learn about Avraham’s great sacrifice to follow Hashem. Avraham had to leave his home for a foreign land, and went against everything that was “normal.” In the end, Avraham is promised that his children will inhabit the great Land of Israel. With this we see that in order to become a role model and grow in Avodas Hashem, we must make sacrifices that could be uncomfortable.“The righteous man lives by his faith” (Chavakuk 2:4).
