Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Gilli Richman

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I am a Political Science major and Global Studies minor because I hope to positively impact society through advocating for justice, equality, and democratic values and make a difference in the world.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
I love Jewish life on campus because it doesn’t matter what your background is and there are always opportunities to get involved.

Do you have any siblings?
I have an older brother named Akiva who is 22 and a younger brother named Eytan who is 15.

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
I have many hobbies!! I do henna art, play softball, read, and love music, which is why I have my own college radio show on WHRW 90.5 FM Binghamton.

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
I have two!! My first favorite Jewish holiday is Chanukah, because I love watching the Chanukah candles burn as I read a book and who doesn’t love eight days of presents!  My other favorite Jewish holiday is Yom Ha’atzmaut, because growing up, my mom used to take me to Yom Ha’atzmaut parties with Israeli food and Israeli dancing.

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
My favorite Jewish childhood memory is the night after Purim, when my family would pour all the candy and food that we got from Mishloach Manot on the table, and have the most intense candy draft you have ever seen.  Each person in the family would draft a candy one by one and we have all the rules laid out.  We still do it every year!!

How do you envision yourself in twenty years?
I hope to be happy, well-traveled, have an abundance of knowledge, and be surrounded by friends and family.

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
Hmmm honestly lockdown was pretty boring, but I went skydiving on my 18th birthday, when covid calmed down a little.  I am wearing a mask in the skydiving video, so does that count?

What makes you proud to be a Jew?
I am proud to be a Jew because of the history that the Jewish people hold and our supportive Jewish community that always shows up for others.  I value the traditions passed down from generation to generation and am proud to hear the stories of my ancestors.

Fun at Chabad!
Fun Fact

The March in DC on Tuesday was the largest gathering of Jews in American History.

Jewish Humor

Why did the Shabbat candles decide to become a comedians?

They wanted to light up the room with laughter every Friday night!

Torah Thought

In this week’s Parsha, Esav sells the right of the first born to Yaakov for lentil soup. The question is, why was Yaakov making lentil soup. The commentaries explain that Yaakov was cooking this for Yitzchak who was mourning Avraham. Yitzchak was going to eat lentil soup because it is in the shape of a circle to remind us of the circle of life. This is also why many have the custom to eat bagels for the final meal of the period of mourning.
