Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Ethan Bernstein

Where are you from? Where did you go to high school?
I’m from Hewlett, NY (One of the five towns) and I went to Hewlett High School.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
This is the main reason I went to Binghamton and now that I’m here, it’s my favorite part of college. There are so many opportunities to connect to Judaism, learn, and meet new people.
Chabad’s weekly programs such as Supper and Study and Pizza and Parsha are awesome.

Do you have any siblings?
I have 3 brothers - Kenny (24), Matthew (22), and Ryan (15). Also, a cat who’s like 12.

Do you have a hobby? Why do you love it?
I play guitar. It’s so much fun and I really get immersed in the music, which helps me zone out all the noise in life for a minute.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
My mind immediately went to some meaty cholent, but I also love latkes and matza brei.

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
Well, I love them all, but if I had to choose one it would probably be Succos. Sitting in the
sukkah with a nice breeze, eating a wonderful meal with good friends/family is a fantastic
feeling. Also, shaking the lulav and walking around with the lulav and esrog during hallel is a lot of fun.

What's a quote or saying that you like?
I like the word “Geshmak.” I picked it up from my time in Reishit last year, and it translates to “delicious,” but I use it to describe something that’s amazing or in response to something
working out perfectly, and no English word really encapsulates that definition and packs the
same punch.

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
Wow, I never really thought about this. A lot come to mind. One, albeit simple, would be walking to shul with my dad every Shabbos morning. There’s no feeling like this. The conversations we would have and the excitement for shul that built up during that walk is something I’ll cherish forever.

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
A few highlights of the year so far are Rock N’ Ribs, the Simchas Torah hakafos, and of course all the Friday night Shabbos meals.

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
Biking to Grant Park with my mom and watching the ducks and turtles.

Torah Thought

In this week’s Parsha, we learn Yaakov sent Angels to impress and terrify Esav (Beresheis 32:4). The Midrash Tanchuma says that this teaches us that righteous people are even better than Angels because Yaakov was able to summon them. The reason for the greater stature is because Angels remain at the same level of holiness forever, they are static. On the other hand, we human beings have the chance to grow and improve ourselves.

Advice for Life

Q: Is it Kosher to leave negative reviews online?

A: While we value freedom of speech, the Torah teaches responsibility in our words, even in reviews. Negative reviews can be an issue if they harm someone, but sometimes it's a duty. The Chafetz Chaim's rules: it must benefit, be true, and not exaggerated. Talk to the seller first. Check if the benefit outweighs harm, and if there's no other way, share it. Ensure your motivation is right. Leave reviews where they matter. Our sages warn against bad speech causing trouble, so let's be careful with our words for a better outcome!
