Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Corey Brand

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I’m majoring in Geographic Information Systems. It’s a nice blend between STEM and social science.

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
The Huge Jewish Community!

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I’m from Fort Lauderdale, FL, and I went to the American Heritage School.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus? How big and plentiful it is! Especially in times like these, I’m glad Bing hasn’t really experienced horrible antisemitism like other schools have, and our positive impact and pride on campus definitely plays a part in that!

Do you have any siblings?
I’m unfortunately an only child.

What is your favorite book? Why?
I love The Man in the High Castle is such an interesting alternate history/sci-fi. I’ve read it many times, and then when the TV show came out, I was so happy.

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
Researching my family tree! It’s so cool to learn about my ancestors and where they came from!

What is your favorite Jewish food?
I love a good noodle kugel.

What is your favorite food?
Pizza (even though I’ve been told I don’t know good pizza because I’m from Florida.)

What's a quote or saying that you like?
"If you will it, it is no dream."
Said by Herzl and in one of my favorite movies, The Big Lebowski

Fun at Chabad!
Fun Fact
In 2012, Chabad at Binghamton tried to break a Guinness World Record for the most dreidels spun at the same time, with over 749 dreidels!
Jewish Humor
Why did the dreidel break up with the menorah?

It couldn't handle the constant spinning – said it needed a more stable relationship!

Torah Thought

This week’s Parsha contains 112 verses corresponding to the mnemonic yabok. The root of yabok means emptying out. Rabbi Dovid Feinstein teaches that this refers to the beginning of Klal Yisroel’s first exile, which is initiated in this week’s Parsha. The lesson here is that even though times may start tough (Galus), there is always an end goal and growth plan that Hashem has in mind (Geula)
