Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Introducing Al Furman

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I'm from the Bronx and went to Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I'm studying neuroscience and am Pre-med. I was originally a bio major, but then I heard somewhere that neuro was the hardest major at Binghamton, so I decided I wanted to challenge myself and it has definitely lived up to that expectation.

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
I am an extreme sports junkie, I like to do any and all of them. I love feeling like I'm flying while hill bombing at like 30mph (and snowboarding at 50).

Do you have any siblings?
I have an older sister who attends SUNY University at Buffalo

What's your dream job?
I would love to work for an advertising agency and travel the world just taking cool photos for them to use for their advertisements. I like to think I have a knack for seeing really good pictures.

What's a quote or saying that you like?
My friend has a list of my "best quotes", one of them is "the Jews are back" I really like this quote.

How do you envision yourself in twenty years?
In 20 years I see myself living somewhere in Europe or Israel with an amazing wife and beautiful children. Hopefully I am doing something that I love, and most of all I hope that I don't lose my personality and pursuit of adventure.

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
I used to wake up at like 4 am quite often to watch the sunrise with my friends, that was a really good time.

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
When I was younger I used to go to synagogue with my dad and while he was praying I was playing soccer with my friends in the hallway.

If you were a breakfast cereal, which one would you be and why?
Buzzfeed says that I am coco-puffs, but I don't entirely agree...

Torah Thought

G‑d commands the Jewish people: "An eternal flame should always be kept burning on the altar; it should never be extinguished."
The fire on the altar where the sacrifices were offered should always continue to burn. In the Holy Temple, there was a special chamber where hot coals were kept burning, so that the fire on the Alter could be relit whenever necessary.

When G‑d commanded the Jewish people to build the Tabernacle, He said: "And I will dwell within them." Shouldn't the verse have said "I will dwell within it"? It says "them" to teach us that every Jewish person is like a miniature Temple. Every Jew must always have a fiery love for G‑d in his heart, just like the fire which burns all the time on the altar.

Berman and Plotsker's Perspective

Reasons to go to Shabbat 2400:

On April 5th, 2024, an unprecedented opportunity will be available to each and every one of you reading this newsletter, the opportunity to celebrate Shabbat with 2399 of your peers. In anticipation of the event, we wanted to highlight our 5 favorite reasons to attend.

Y-Studs: Come to Shabbat 2400 for a performance to remember from one of the premiere Jewish A Cappella groups.

Video Guest Stars (Montana Tucker & more): Some of the internet’s biggest Jewish celebrities have personalized messages to our Binghamton community you’re not going to want to miss!

Largest Shabbat Gathering in American College History: No college has ever attempted a Shabbat gathering this large, so make sure to come to officially mark your name in the metaphorical record book.

Great Food: Are you someone who looks forward to the home cooked comfort food you get every Friday night at Chabad? If so, come to Shabbat 2400 for the same quality food cooked by dozens of incredible volunteers.

Great Vibes (Guaranteed Seats Next to Your Friends): While Chabad Friday nights are always an amazing time, it does get a bit frustrating to occasionally sit separate from your friends due to capacity issues. Shabbat 24o0, on the other hand, guarantees you seating next to whomever you want without the normal chaos.

We hope you are all as excited as we are to celebrate an unbelievable Shabbat together!

Matthew Plotsker, Tzvi Berman, & Sam Weingard
