Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Introducing Esther Malul

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I’m currently majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. I wanted to major in marketing because it’s both creative and analytical, and I felt like it would suit me well.

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
I chose Binghamton primarily because of the Jewish community, but also because I heard the business program was really good.

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I’m from Manhattan, NY and I went to SAR High School.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
I love how vibrant it is! I also love how many of us there are, it feels like I can just assume everyone I meet is Jewish until proven otherwise.

Do you have any siblings?
I have one younger brother. His name is David, and he’s a freshman at SAR.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
I have two! It’s a tie between sfiha (also called lahmajeen) and matzah pizza.

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
My favorite Jewish holiday is probably Purim. I love the atmosphere of joy it brings, dressing up, and having the same name as the queen is pretty cool too :)

If you were a breakfast cereal, which one would you be and why?
Buzzfeed said I was Lucky Charms, but my favorite one is Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

What's your dream job?
I don’t have all the details figured out yet, but hopefully a job that I love working at every day.

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
Building random Jewish objects out of food at synagogue youth groups. I used to love eating them at the end.

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
My favorite Chabad experience is cooking in the kitchen on Thursday mornings. We talk, play music, and cook (three of my favorite things) all while helping out Chabad. I look forward to it every week!

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
During Pesach right after lockdown started, my high school got a bunch of teachers to perform a little part of Chad Gadya and put it together in a Youtube video. It’s really cute and made me feel a little less sad about the fact that we had to spend Pesach in lockdown.

What makes you proud to be a Jew?
The fact that we’re so resilient. Sometimes it feels like the whole world is against us just for existing, but we just keep showing up and supporting each other.

Finals Study Tips

As inevitable as death and taxes, nice Binghamton weather once again coincides with finals. As a second semester freshman and an SOM senior with no finals, we’re probably not qualified to give any finals advice to anyone reading this newsletter. We’re going to do it anyway.

  • Change Study Spots - If you’re anything like us, you likely get antsy when sitting in the same spot for too long. If that happens to you too, we strongly recommend changing your study spot. Frequent changes in study locations can lead to an 82%* increase in productivity

  • Build in Breaks - As humans, we aren’t conditioned to stare at a computer screen or book for 12 hours straight and study. Build periodic breaks into your schedule to socialize (consider eating meals with friends) and destress to help hit the books twice as hard later

  • Put Away Your Phone - As phone addicts ourselves, we know how hard it can be. Putting your phone in another room can boost productivity up to 94%* and help avoid procrastinating work by scrolling through social media. It also makes your built in breaks so much more enjoyable

  • Have Fun - It’s not too deep. It may seem like the finals are the be all and end all, but you will all land great jobs when you graduate. Picture yourself during commencement if you need to help remember how inconsequential a percentage of class grade really matters in the scheme of things

We sincerely hope you all enjoyed reading this newsletter as much as we enjoyed writing. Best of luck with life, don’t fail your finals, and enjoy the Summer!
