Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Shoshanna Udler

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
I chose Binghamton University for many reasons, but ultimately it was because of the special Jewish community here.  I knew that I wanted to surround myself with like minded people who share similar values and when I visited here in high school, it just felt right.

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I'm from Potomac Maryland and went to Berman Hebrew Academy.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
I love how vibrant and energetic the Jewish life and people are on campus. There is always an event happening relating to chesed, Israel, or a holiday, plus there's always good food!

Do you have any siblings?
I am so lucky to have an older brother here at Binghamton with me (shoutout to Jacob) and a younger brother named Jonah who is still in highschool.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
My favorite Jewish food is definitely matzah ball soup, especially if it's made by my mom!

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
My favorite Jewish holiday is probably Rosh Hashanah. I love being able to have meals and spend time with my extended family. Rosh hashanah to me is about setting goals for the year and reflecting on the year that has passed. I also love apples and honey :)

What's your dream job?
I don't know yet exactly what I want to do, but I know that I want to help people and make a positive effect on others lives.

What's a quote or saying that you like?
One quote that inspires me is "If not now, when?"

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
So far, my favorite Chabad experience is Friday night meals with everyone. It's such an exciting way to start off Shabbat, being in a room of 500 people, all singing shalom aleichem, and all enjoying Rebbetsin Rivky's delicious Challah! I love how every week I get to sit next to new people and am able to connect and hear their stories.

What makes you proud to be a Jew?
What makes me proud to be a Jew, stems from the people who I have come from. My grandparents taught me that being Jewish is a privilege and an opportunity to be a part of something so special and greater than myself. My parents taught me that being Jewish gives me meaning in life, a closer relationship with God, and a wider community that I will always be a part of.

Soul Coffee
Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

In the month of Elul, the month before Rosh Hashanah, a signal goes out to every Jewish soul that it is time to return to the palace that is home.

It is a signal both subtle and loud.

Subtle, because it does not awaken even those who are closest—every soul must awaken itself. Loud, because it reaches those who have been thrown to the edge of the universe.

Loud, because it is a signal of love and joy. Subtle, because it is an intimately personal call.

Loud, because it provides immeasurable powers to break out of whatever holds you back, lift you above all obstacles, and carry you all the way home. Subtle, because the power is there, but latent, quiet, awaiting your determination.

How can a signal be both subtle and loud, joyful and intimate, empowering and latent?

Because this signal originates from the very origin of your own soul, that place from which your soul was torn but has never truly abandoned. And as distant as a soul may stray, as lost as she may be, she will always remain one with her Beloved.

And now she hears her Beloved call, from a place deep within herself.
