Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Raphi Burnstein
What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
Music because I have a natural gift for understanding and listening to music. I am also pitch perfect so I can know the note of any pitch I hear.

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
I wanted a strong Jewish community close to my home in Monsey and I wanted to be surrounded by nature at school.

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I am from Wesley Hills, a village just North of Monsey. I went to Yeshivat Frisch.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
I love that everybody is willing to help each other out at any moment, it really brings a sense of community.

Do you have any siblings?
I have a sister Ariella who is studying in Barnard.

What is your favorite book? Why?
I don't have a favorite book but one that sticks out is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbruy. This book is set in a society where people burn books and the main character tries to salvage books.

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
I love hiking because I get to surround myself in nature for as much time as I want and get to see animals, plants, ancient artifacts and natural wonders.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
It is cheesecake, I really like cream cheese and cheese. I always look forward to eating it on Shavuot.

What is your favorite food?
Chicken poppers, I love spicy food

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
Sukkot, I love being outdoors and I love spending time with my family

If you were a breakfast cereal, which one would you be and why?
Honey Bunches of Oats because it tastes sweet, and I am a sweet guy.

What's your dream job?
A classical music composer

What's a quote or saying that you like?
"Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent" Victor Hugo

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
Going to my grandma's house for passover and spending time with all of my cousins

How do you envision yourself in twenty years?
Having a family, being able to juggle multiple composition projects and traveling the world.

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
Color Run because I love running and I get the chance to run with other people at Chabad.

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
Hiking with my Dad and my sister to the woods in our backyards and coming home, I saw a Red fox through the window.

What makes you proud to be a Jew?
The Jewish people emphasize reading the Bible, considered by many to be one of the greatest books of literature. As a Jew I have the opportunity to be a part of a very large book club, and to know I don’t have to make a big effort to join.

Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

If you believe you are an angel, prepare for disappointment.

If you believe you are a beast, you may well become depressed.

Best to know you are human. Stay away from situations you can‘t handle, and when you fail, pick yourself up, say you’re sorry, and keep on going.

That‘s even higher than the angels.
