Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Gavi Yaghoubian

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I’m a Biology Major.
I am on the pre med track so on one hand biology was the easiest to take because it satisfied all of my requirements, but I also have always just really liked learning about biology.

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
I chose Binghamton for its really good academics, and also because of its huge Jewish community. When I was picking colleges I knew that having a big Jewish community is one of the most important factors that affected my decision.

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I’m from Forest Hills, Queens, NYC. I went to SAR for high school.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
The thing I love about Jewish life on campus is how diverse it is. There are so many opportunities to get involved, from Chabad to JLIC to Meor there is always going to be somewhere you can fit in and have a great time.

Do you have any siblings?
I have one younger sister, she is coming to Binghamton this year in the spring semester.

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
One of my favorite hobbies is skiing. I love it because when I'm on the mountain, I feel so free from all my stress and any pressure that I had been dealing with.

What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is a Colombian dish called Empanadas. It is fried corn dough that is filled with a meat and potato mixture. With a little bit of lemon juice and hot sauce it tastes so amazing.

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
My favorite chag is Simchat Torah. I love the dancing so much and all the simcha surrounding it really makes it a really hype holiday

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
My favorite Jewish childhood memory is chasing around my cousins during dayenu with scallions, if yk yk.

What makes you proud to be a Jew?
I’m proud to belong to a religion of such diverse backgrounds and experiences. Everyone has a different way in which they connect to Hashem and it's so beautiful to see everyone be so connected to Judaism and their faith.
