Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Aviva Soclof

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
Human Development, and I chose it because I want to go into Education!

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I’m from the one and only Cleveland, Ohio (well, technically Beachwood, because everyone who says they live in Cleveland actually lives in Beachwood…), and I went to Fuchs Mizrachi School.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
I love that even though we have a ton of Jews on campus, it still feels like a tight-knit community.

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
I would say that my hobby is baking. Why do you work when you can bake?! I love it because it makes me feel productive, but I also have a major sweet tooth and love to eat what I bake.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
I know it’s a classic, but it’s gotta be a Matza Ball. I will have one in any type of soup, why limit it to Chicken?!

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
I absolutely love Pesach- yes, I get really competitive when it comes to finding the Afikomen.

What's a quote or saying that you like?
“I can be flexible, as long as everything is the way I want it. I’m totally flexible”- Lorelai Gilmore

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
Going back to Pesach being my favorite Jewish Holiday... I love getting to find the Afikomen at the Seder. My sisters knew how important it was to me, so they would do everything in their power to mess with my head and try not to let me get it, and while frustrating at the time, it always created so much laughter and joy.

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
I love Friday night dinner, especially when it’s a full Shabbat and it feels crowded but with all your friends. I love staying till the very end and getting to catch up with my friends.

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
My whole class playing the game “Psych” every day during every class in the middle of Zoom school, and watching people's reactions through their cameras and having to hold in the laughter so the teachers wouldn’t call us out for all being on our phones.

Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

Intolerance lies at the core of evil.

Not the intolerance that results from any threat or danger.

Not the intolerance that arises from negative experience.

Just intolerance of another being who dares to exist, who dares to diminish the space in the universe left for you.

Intolerance without cause.

It is so deep within us, because every human being secretly desires the entire universe to himself.

Our only way out is to learn compassion without cause. To care for each other simply because the other exists.
