Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Kira Klayman

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
Biomedical Engineering.  I'm not sure what I want to do with this yet, but I love science and tech, and hope to fuse these interests together. I also want to make a difference in the world of medicine.

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
I chose Binghamton because of the vibrant Jewish community, the engineering school, and research opportunities.

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I'm from Oceanside, NY and went to SKA for high school.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
I love Shabbat on campus! From Kabbalat Shabbat, to enjoying meals at Chabad, to hanging out with my friends, Shabbat allows me to take a break from the stress of school and relax.

What is your favorite book? Why?
Dystopias and thrillers are my favorite.  I can't choose one, but some of the best I've read are: The Giver, Divergent, Blood Sugar, and Silent Patient.

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
I love playing and watching sports.  Basketball, softball, and swimming are my favorites and I'm a huge NYY and NYK fan!  Playing sports is fun and takes my mind off of other things, and it's always fun to root for a team.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
My favorite Jewish food might be fresh homemade challah.

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
I love all the Jewish holidays but if I had to choose one, it might be Pesach.  I always spend the first days together with my cousins and grandparents.  My grandfather always gives out special coins for Divrei Torah at the Seder and toys for the makkot.  Even now, we still have a lot of fun with toy frogs and animal masks!

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
I love so many experiences at Chabad but my favorite might be Ashkefardic night!

What makes you proud to be a Jew?
I'm proud to be a Jew everyday when I see Israel's successes and just overall kindness and generosity of our people.

Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

There is hope, and there is trust in G‑d—and they are two distinct attitudes.

Hope is when there is something to latch on to, some glimmer of a chance. The drowning man, they say, will clutch at any straw to save his life.

Trust in G‑d is even when there is nothing in which to hope. The decree is sealed. The sword is drawn over the neck. By all laws of nature, there is no way out.

But the One who runs the show doesn’t need any props.
