Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Eliora Roth
What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
What I love about Jewish life on campus is that it is everywhere you go– no matter where you situate yourself– there is always someone from within the Jewish community and it creates an environment that can not be replicated. Chabad has a tremendous impact in creating this environment.

What is your favorite book? Why?
Son by Louis Lowry or Our Violent Delights by Chloe. I have read and reread Son a number of times; it is a wonderfully written book and is a comfort book for me. Our Violent Delights is a sort of Romeo and Juliet novel with a horror twist and I absolutely love horror, whether it be books, movies, tv shows, etc.

Do you have a hobby? Why do you love it?
I love to sing and dance, particularly contemporary dance and hip hop. I enjoy song and dance because I am talented in those areas and I have been engaged in those areas for years in and out of school so they come naturally to me. I also love performing which allows me to showcase my skills to audiences.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
My favorite Jewish food is k’rah. It’s a Sephardic dish of meat stuffed zucchini that my Savta makes every Rosh Hashana for the B’rachot and it is absolutely delicious!

What is your favorite food?
I have a lot of favorite foods, so it’d be hard to choose just one, but I’ll start with pretty much any type of pasta; I love pasta, especially my homemade Baked Ziti or the Penne alla Vodka from my favorite restaurant. I also LOVE pizza. The last thing I’ll mention is any home cooked vegetable, my mom is the best chef.

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
My favorite holiday is Pesach. I am sephardic, so I’m able to enjoy kitneot; I love the stories and songs as well as our unique Sephardic customs. I am also a night person, so being able to spend quality time with my family while being in my element is very nice.

If you were a breakfast cereal, which one would you be and why?
If I were a breakfast cereal, I would be Honey Bunches of Oats because, like the cereal, I have many components of which I am made up; each element is unique and important in their own way and contributes something different to the whole and are all flavorful.

What's a quote or saying that you like?
“If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change.” It’s from a Michael Jackson song and I find it true almost always. I also love quoting Brooklyn Nine Nine and can pretty much reference any line word for word.

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
My favorite Jewish childhood memory was probably my bat mitzvah. I love the celebration of taking on the mitzvot and the purely joyous occasion it was. I like the idea of a person being celebrated in the context of the Torah. It is a beautiful thing.

What makes you proud to be a Jew?
I think the real question is what doesn’t make me proud to be a Jew. I love everything about being a Jew and take pride in every aspect! What makes me the most proud to be a Jew is the community and how one is ever alone. I love that whether you are in Israel, America, Canada, or any other place, that our first step is always to find the Jewish community and/or reach out to the Chabad. The stories and philosophy of Judaism are particularly interesting to me and demonstrate how much we’ve overcome as a people.

Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

In six days, G‑d created heaven and earth, and on the seventh day, He rested.

But when G‑d rests, how is there a heaven and earth?

What force sustains the molecules in their places, the electrons in their shells? In what way does any form or matter exist at all?

Rather, for six days, G‑d sustains the creation of heaven and earth by His word, and on the seventh day, it rests within His thought.

For six days, as you speak words to others outside of yourself, so the Creator generates a universe in which each creature senses itself to be outside of Him.

But on Shabbat, if you will only stop to listen, to perceive and to know, you will discover a universe as it is found within the mind of its Creator.
