Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Abby Goldstein

What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I am a Philosophy, Politics, and Law major and I am in my third year but graduating one year early this upcoming spring 2026! I chose to pursue this degree because I have always wanted to become a lawyer and help people receive justice.

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
I chose Binghamton University because I heard such incredible things about the large, warm Jewish community (and all those things were true)! It was important for me to go to a college that had a big Jewish community that felt like home.

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I am from East Brunswick, New Jersey (right near Rutgers) and went to East Brunswick High School.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
I love that the Mitzvah Hub is always parked in the middle of campus on the spine if you need a cup of soup/a treat and want to do mitzvot! I also love that the Mitzvah Hub is always blasting the best Jewish music! It makes me feel so comforted and happy every time I walk on campus.

Do you have any siblings?
Yes! I have one older brother named Lee, he’s 25!

What is your favorite book? Why?
I really love the book Positivity Bias by Mendel Kalmenson. It’s a book that Goldie gifted to GNO board members last year and the book is inspired by the life and teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe!

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
I love going to all kinds of concerts. It’s so fun to hear live music!

What is your favorite Jewish food?
My favorite Jewish food is an Israeli cheese boureka. There’s nothing quite like it!

What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is sushi. I could always go for anyyyy kind of sushi!

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
My favorite Jewish holiday is Rosh Hashanah. I love the feeling of a fresh start to the year and having sweet new beginnings.

If you were a breakfast cereal, which one would you be and why?
Kariot cereal because I am half Israeli!

What's your dream job?
My dream job is to be an entertainment lawyer for a famous singer or actor!

What's a quote or saying that you like?
“Think good and it will be good” -Lubavitcher Rebbe

What is your favorite Jewish childhood memory?
My favorite Jewish childhood memory is celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut in my elementary school! We would have pita bread with Hashachar chocolate spread, “fly” to Israel on a fake plane, and sing Hatikvah!

How do you envision yourself in twenty years?
I envision myself being a successful attorney living in the NY area (or Israel) raising an amazing Jewish family!

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
My favorite Chabad experience is every single GNO event! I have been on GNO board since my freshman year and it is always so amazing working with Goldie and bringing girls together to celebrate Jewish joy!

What's your favorite lockdown experience?
During lockdown, I really loved being home with my family and getting some good bonding time in. I would take my dog on walks all the time and enjoy nature!

What makes you proud to be a Jew?
I am proud to be a Jew for so many reasons that I can’t even fit it into a response. But if I had to pick one reason it’d be because of our resilience. We are such a small but mighty group of people and I am so proud to be apart of a community that has survived for thousands of years even with such hate and discrimination. Am Yisrael Chai!

Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

At first, there was nothing but endless light.

The light was concealed.

But the One who shines all light remains everywhere.

The adult seeks light.

The small child touches its Source.

Pray as a small child.

Even with all the keys to light that you hold, pray as a small child.

Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch, "Shoresh Mitzvat Hatefillah."
