Jewish Bearcat of the Week
Featuring Ben Kochman
What is your major, and why did you decide to pursue this degree?
I am an Integrative Neuroscience major and I decided to pursue this degree because I’m on the pre-med track and found it to be more interesting than regular biology.

Why did you choose Binghamton University?
I wanted to get away from home a bit while still being close enough to go home when needed. I was also a huge fan of the vibrant Jewish community on campus.

Where are you from?  Where did you go to high school?
I’m from Queens, NY and went to DRS for high school.

What do you love about Jewish life on campus?
The community is very tight knit and everyone has each others backs. I especially love Friday nights at Chabad and the learning at the JLIC.

Do you have any siblings?
I have one older brother. Very chill guy.

Do you have a hobby?  Why do you love it?
I really enjoy playing tennis. It’s a good release and keeps me active.

What is your favorite Jewish food?
Shawarma in a laffa.

What is your favorite food?
I’m always in the mood for some good steak.

What's your favorite Jewish holiday and why?
Hot take: My favorite holiday is Pesach. There’s just something about it. Chanukah takes a close second though.

If you were a breakfast cereal, which one would you be and why?
Probably Frosted Flakes. I’m pretty basic.

What's your dream job?
A doctor. I don’t know which type exactly but I’m interested in emergency medicine, pulmonology, or cardiology.

What's a quote or saying that you like?
I’m a big fan of Pirkei Avot 1:14

What is your favorite Chabad experience?
Definitely the Friday night dinners. It’s a great way to start Shabbos and end the stressful week.

Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

The Baal Shem Tov taught:

To live a G‑dly life, to keep all the mitzvahs with awe, with love, and with joy—this is not something distant from you. It is who you truly are.

Because within you is a soul, a G‑d point, a divine living being that cannot allow itself to be torn away from G‑d, that only desires to be always at one with Him.

For this thing is very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it. (Deut. 30:14)

The Alter Rebbe taught:

Here’s what you must do:

Fix a time each day to study the words of inner Torah and ponder who G‑d is, who you really are, and what the relationship is between your soul and Him.

And then call out to Him in prayer that He will open your heart.

Then, at those moments when you are tugged away from your true desires, you will only need to remind yourself, “No, this is not me. The real me doesn’t want to be separated from my G‑d even for a moment. Why should I be a fool and listen to a voice that is not me?”

The struggle—the struggle is precious. It is not up to you to win the struggle. Cherish the struggle.

But to be who you truly are in the things you do, the words you speak, and the thoughts you choose to dwell upon—this is very close to your heart.

It is who you truly are.
